Start by classifying your freight
Before you talk to a single carrier, write down what you actually move: dimensions, weight, value, temperature sensitivity, urgency, and pickup/delivery access constraints. That single page determines whether you need hot shot, flatbed, refrigerated, or oversize service.
Most shippers who think they need "a truck" actually need a specific category of truck, and getting that classification right saves money on every load.
Use specialized marketplaces, not general brokers
Generic brokers can move generic freight, but they tend to mark up specialized loads and use whichever carrier is closest, not the best fit. A specialized marketplace lets you post a load and have it answered by drivers who specifically run the equipment you need.
For hot shot freight in Texas and the surrounding region, Hot Rig is the cleanest fit. For oversize flatbed, dedicated flatbed boards work better. The principle is the same: match the marketplace to the freight category.
Vet the carrier
Three quick checks. Confirm their MC and DOT numbers in the FMCSA SAFER database. Verify they have current cargo and liability insurance with enough coverage for your freight value. Read their marketplace ratings and the equipment they actually run.
A carrier that has done 50 runs of similar freight on the marketplace is a safer bet than a cold-call carrier with no track record, even if the cold call is cheaper.
Price it fairly
Underpricing specialized loads is the most common shipper mistake. If you offer below-market rates, only the operators with the worst options will take your load. Quality drivers will skip it.
Use the marketplace to see what comparable runs are paying this week. Match or slightly exceed that rate and you'll have multiple qualified drivers competing for your load.
Build a relationship with the carriers who execute well
Once you find drivers who deliver on time, communicate clearly, and handle your freight with care, send them more loads. Repeat-business pricing tends to be 10 to 20% better than cold-market rates for both sides.
Specialized freight is a long game, and good operators are scarce. Treat them like the asset they are.
